    Princess Elizabeth ascends the throne

    25-year-old Princess Elizabeth, who was visiting Kenya at the time, ascended the throne upon the death of King George VI. Her official coronation took place the next year at Westminster Abbey.

    On the 20th anniversary of the end of World War II, the Queen embarked on a 10-day visit to the Federal Republic of Germany. Her visit symbolised the reconciliation of the two nations and was the first official visit by a British royal since 1913.

    What is now a regular practice among British royals, was first taken by Queen Elizabeth during a royal tour of Australia and New Zealand. She chose to greet the crowds by walking by them instead of just waving—breaking centuries of royal tradition.

    Silver Jubilee

    After 25 years on the throne, Queen Elizabeth marked her Silver Jubilee by embarking on a tour of Britain and Commonwealth countries. The monarch travelled almost 90,000 kilometres.

  • 1986

    Visit to China

    Queen Elizabeth became the first British monarch to visit the Chinese mainland. The visit came after the decision was made to return sovereignty over Hong Kong to China.

    Golden Jubilee

    A dark shadow was cast over the Queen’s Golden Jubilee celebration by the loss of her sister and mother within weeks. Queen Elizabeth nevertheless marked 50 years on the throne by travelling more than 40,000 miles with visits to the Caribbean, Australia, New Zealand, and Canada.
