Description
American Royal BBQ Champion!! Plowboys BBQ ‘Yardbird’ Rub works great on seafood, pork, and especially chicken. Try the rub from the team that won the 2009 American Royal Invitational beating 123 past Grand Champions to capture the overall crown. Plowboys ‘Yardbird’ rub was developed for competition BBQ, but for those of us that are just backyard BBQ geeks, it gives us the opportunity to produce award-winning BBQ without the competition. This is a savoury rub with a touch of sweetness that is followed on the back of the tongue with just a little heat.

I saw this mentioned in an article by a national barbeque champion. It seemed well worth a try … and that was a good decision. I thought my homemade rub couldn’t be beat … but this gives it a very good run. Ok … I’ll have to admit that it “might” be just a bit better. Certainly worth a try.

Been experimenting on ribs with this stuff. First, as you already know, ribs have a lot of surface area to meat ratio. That being said, my first go-round was a light dusting…enough to cover, just lightly. The flavor was pretty good but it needed more. My last go-round, a applied a bit more and found it to be a tad salty. So if cooking ribs, I’d add in some brown sugar to bulk it up a bit and cut the salt. Now I also did a pork butt. This in comparison to ribs has a much bigger meat to surface area ratio and although I added the same amount of rub to it as I did my ribs…the flavor was much more balanced. So the answer to “is it too salty?”…depends on what you’re applying it too, plain and simple.

This stuff is just plain fantastic. It has become my go to base rub for pork butt, ribs, and chicken. I still love to finish with something a bit sweeter (like Cowtown Sweet Spot), but Plowboys Yardbird is just awesome for that thick base rub that isn’t so heavy on sugar that you’ll end up with a burnt bark. I will not change now that I’ve found Yardbird. It’s just hard to beat.

My favorite rub for chicken. I flatten my chicken breasts and lightly coat them with olive oil. I then sprinkle a light coating on both sides. Don’t overdue the rub. A little goes a long way. I grill as hot as my grill goes four to five minuets on each side. My mouths watering.

I decided to try this competition rub based on article I read and Tuffy Stone’s recommendatiom. Wow I wanted some buffalo wings for the 4th of July so decided to try this rub. All I did was use some Olive oil about a tablespoon and generously sprinkled the rub all over the wings then tossed. On the Mak 1 Star General on smoke for 30 minutes then on my Weber Genesis Silver for a few minutes on each side at about 450 degrees or so. I did not even toss in the buffalo sauce because the wings were perfect as is. Highly recommend this rub and I will buy more.

We have used this several times on chicken and on pork. It is mighty tasty on both. It took me only a few weeks to run out of the small size and I just reordered the larger size. This will be my go to rub for chicken on the Cookshack PG500 pellet grill

I’ve smoked two or three whole chickens on the Big Green Egg using Plowboys, and have enjoyed all results. I treated the birds with olive oil before applying the rub, and cooked for just under three hours at about 300F. The rub imparts a really nice “barbq-y” flavor to the meat, with savory aspects, and makes for a very tasty and crispy skin. My family give thumbs up. We will continue to use this rub.

I purchased this at a BBQ store the first time I used it for smoking meat. We love it, I also use it on popcorn after air popping and spraying the popcorn with coconut oil. Adds a little kick to the popcorn and keeps the calories down.

This is the best seasoning for chicken! I haven’t tried it on any other meat yet but I’m sure it will still be a winner! It’s not salty at all. Can’t wait to grill some more wings today??

My son who has a wood pellet grill recommended this to me when I got a wood pellet grill and it is the best rub I have ever used. I put it on beef, chicken, pork, and even salmon and now I can’t imagine grilling and eating any of those without this rub. Now I always make sure I have an extra jar on hand so I don’t ever run out!

I love this stuff! I’ve tried quite a few different rubs, always by rubbing one or two pieces of meat with this rub and one or two pieces with whatever I am trying. I then have everyone take a bit of each and pick their favorite, and this one almost always wins. I also use it on my Boston Butts for pulled pork and it always tastes amazing. The hungry mouths speak for themselves!

This is a great rub. It’s made the best bark on my pulled pork yet, with deep rich color and great taste. Before I made my own but just couldn’t get it quite right, but this stuff is fool proof. Also the container is more than I expected so that was a bonus. Highly recommend

This was recommended by my brother to use on Pork. I used it on smoked wings Saturday night and smoked pork on Sunday! It was great on both! I am new to smoking meats but this was awesome. I would highly recommend it!

Shipping was fast and service is second to none! I really like this rub. Its well balanced flavor with just a touch of heat, definitely puts it in my top five favorite rubs list.

I use plow boys every time I smoke chicken. Use it in competition and events and at home. It is the best. I buy it for our Pastor. His family uses it in all meats and veggies. On the grill or in the oven. Good Stuff.
Tate –
Don’t let the name fool you… its great on ribs too. gives you the mahogony color you want too.
J M –
This has a fantastic sweet/spicy flavor that would be awesome on ribs and pork shoulder. I used a very similar rub (my own ingredients) so i am happy to have this at the ready when I am smoking foods.
Neill –
Have tried a lot of different rubs. I purchased this based on reviews and for baby back ribs. Tonight I smoked a chicken and just coated it nicely and threw it on the pellet smoker while I mowed the lawn. That was the best flavored chicken I have ever cooked on my treager. I will be purchasing more, especially after I put two chicken this weekend on the wood smoker. I can’t wait. Give it a shot you will be glad you did just like me.

I bought this rub after seeing it used extensively by Chef Tom of All Things BBQ’s “The Sauce”. This rub has very good flavor. I have used on both pork and chicken with great success. If you are like me and make a lot of your own rubs, be careful with this as the first ingredient is salt and a heavy hand will result in a very salty product. Overall – great rub.
Dirtbiker –
This is the best rub that I have ever used! As soon as I got I fired up the Kamado Joe Classic and put a 10lb pork butt on. Rubbed it the night before and let it sit all night. Great flavor. Used it season chicken and burgers as well. I defiantly recommend this stuff. Thanks to All Thins Barbecue on YouTube!!!
David M –
Great on ribs. Bought it after a bbq smoker blogger called it the best rub. In my experience, it is. Best ribs I’ve ever done are with this (and pretty much only this) in the smoker with pecan or hickory wood.
Maxwell –
Just tried these on some wings. The taste is quite good. It is not too salty or bland. Has the right balance and flavor.
Perks H –
I smoked 20 pounds of wing on my Traeger and this rub is AWESOME! You won’t go wrong with this !
Dublinbuckeye –
excellent all around rub. Good flavor. Not hot so it pleases the masses. Great to have on hand when you don’t have time to make your own.

A key component for Chicken on the BBQ. My son and his housemates loves it.
A Customer –
I saw a article on yahoo about burnt ends brisket using Plowboys Bovine Bold Rub and being how I love to smoke meat I bought it and it came with Plowboys Yardbird Rub. I have used them both on beef and pork and the result is a fantastic flavor and the people I cook for rave about the flavor. Since then I have purchased Plowboys Fin and Feather Rub and used it on both turkey and chicken and they turn out awesome. I would recommend these Plowboys Rub products to anyone who love to smoke bake and fry meats it is awesome.
Nancy H –
Tried it on Chicken last night and everyone remarked how good it was. Will be smoking a butt with it tomorrow.
Bryan G –
I get lots of compliments on my chicken with this rub. I oil the bird (whole butterflied, 1/2 bird, or pieces) and then apply the rub. Meat goes into fridge overnight. Cooks up perfectly on gas grill set to 325-350.

Ordered for my roommate……he says he really likes it.

Yardbiurd rub is a perfect blend of spiciness, a bit of heat and a touch of sweet. We use it on just about everything … poultry, beef and fish.
Anson –
I got this on a recommendation for a boston butt and it came out tasting really great and complimenting the pork well. Looking forward to trying it on other meats!
Stephen N –
So good and a staple in my kitchen. Pork or chicken can’t go wrong! Yum!
David B –
One of our favorite rubs for chicken and other foul
Lhiob –
Liked the flavor very much, but most of the review are correct, it is VERY salty. Just know that you need a lighter touch with this than other rubs you may have tried or made. If you take care and go lightly with it there is a very good flavor to this rub that I personally liked much better than the Killer Hogs product.

I went on a Amazon spending spree in search of my favorite dry rub and this is “The One” at this point in time. I know some would say it’s on the salty side and I could not disagree with that. I however like my rubs on the salty side versus the sweet side. I have been using this on chicken for my stir fry and for also making chicken burritos. I have tried coating the chicken and leaving it in the fridge for a few hours along with coating the chicken and frying immediately. Both produced great results. I even tried using this when making a cheese filled burger. I used two hamburger patties and sandwiched cheese in the middle with a coating of this Yardbird in the middle as well. I got comments that these were the best cheese burgers my guests have ever had and they were just pan fried not grilled. So this will continue to be my go to rub for a good long time.
Efren –
Good flavor and very good color. Good flavor profile, a little of everything. Savory, light sweetness, not much spice besides a black pepper spice.
Ryan J –
I use it all the time on chicken and pork. Has a lot more flavor than many all purpose BBQ rubs. Very versatile.
Tailoredsuits –
Works excellent for barbecue ! You don’t need to use much! Flavor is great!
Musubiboy –
Definitely not the most complex rub. But this stuff is my favorite. Not too salty and a bit of sweet.
Wade A –
Easy to get the bark and tastes great!
LW –
Amazing flavor. Love this stuff.
Crystal P –
Not bad at all for the price, thought it lacked a bit of other spices for my tastebuds.
Christian O –
This stuff is the best! Use it on chicken and ribs and everyone talks about best ever!
Don –
I purchased this from amazon. It came with a broken top. Tried to contact them with no luck. Tried to return and found it can’t be returned. This is a good product I use it for a multi purpose rub I will purchase again but not from Amazon.
Mna C –
This is really good on chicken in the smoker, great flavor. Have not tried it on pork but have eaten some pork with it on and it was wonderful. Try it you’ll like it !!!
Bigdamswamp –
Best rub for anything hands down
Bebe –
Use this to rub on my ribs for Labor Day weekend they turned out pretty good and the taste was terrific just don’t use a whole lot because it is salt based just use enough to give whatever you are cooking some flavor
Brad C –
I Have consistently used this blend for all smoking from chicken to to shoulders and and even grilled chops. Use with apple and hickory wood and keep it at about 275F.
Buzzwood –
This is great base rub for pork and fowl. I use it on all my ribs. A lot better than the ones you find on the shelf of the local grocery store.
Porky –
tried on a steak and the best steak i ever had. you cant go wrong with this stuff
Qfan –
I initially tried this rub because it is the one Johnny Trigg uses and recommended on his competition rib recipe. I have purchased at least 3 14 oz. jars and this time around decided that it made more sense to buy a 5 lb. bag since I use it on everything. It is great on chicken of course but also on pork chops, fish and ribs. Highly recommend.
